Any type of construction with time can either wear out or get damaged in the process of exploitation. It is only natural that you would try to protect it for a longer use. What can be done if the top of you screen enclosure is damaged one way or another? Should you consider replacement or repair may solve the case? Let’s look at the options.
Fixing your damaged screens is possible in cases where you have:
- Holes (caused by birds, insects or other creatures)
- Sun degradation
- Mold (on casing and fixtures)
- Corrosion (due to the proximity of the ocean or as a result of birds spending time on your roof)
Fixing holes
Given that the hole size is not too big, you can fix it instead of replacing the whole screen.
The necessary toolkit:
- Screen patches
- Clear silicone caulking
- Cutting device (scissors)
- Paper towel
The Process:
- Check that the screen you want to repair is dry (silicone caulking will not stick to the wet surface)
- Cut the patch of porch screen that is slightly bigger then the hole your are covering.
- Apply silicone caulking on that patch around all edges
- Put the patch directly over the hole
- Using the paper towel remove the excess silicone caulking
The patch solution will fix your problem and restore the integrity of your screen enclosure, however the visible effect will not be as shiny and accurate as in case of the whole screen replacement. Dealing with sun degradation
Over time the sun damage of your screen enclosure will make it look less shiny and may even cause warping along with the paint fainting. One of the solutions is to repaint it over with direct-to-metal paints.
The necessary toolkit:
- Direct-to-metal paint
- Brush / paint roller
- Paint tray
- Body protection equipment (gloves and goggles)
- Plastic sheeting
- Ladder
The Process:
- Protect the floor with plastic sheets
- Put on the body protection equipment
- Use your tray to prepare the paint
- Put the ladder where you want to start and secure it
- Begin painting with either brush or paint roller
Removing mold
We recommend that you chose between two options here – the pressure washer or chemical solution.
To reach the roof part of your enclosure use an extension wand of a pressure washer. Be extra careful to direct the water flow on screen frames and not the screens as it may blow the unwanted holes in them.
Another option is to use bleach or chlorine. Using the spray bottle you can apply it generously on screens. You would need a ladder to reach the roof top and body protection to avoid any contact of chemicals with your skin.
How to estimate the damage and choose the course of action?
While all of the above is a workable option it is important to weigh the pros and cons of each and find the most effective solution that will work for you both in short- and long-term time horizon.
Hurricane damage may often be irreversible and broken screens would require replacement rather then partial fixing. When dealing with holes remember that any patch would make your screen look less attractive and serious corrosion is unfixable just by painting.
