The warm and sunny weather invites you to spend more time outdoors and even more so if you have your own swimming pool. At the same time you may find it tiring to continuously clean the water from leaves and other dirt brought to you by the wind. Having the screen enclosure is the perfect way to enjoy yourself all day long without all that dirt, annoying mosquitoes and other insects.
The screens however get damaged and may need to be repaired or replaced. In Smart Orange Group we offer quick and reliable service to help you solve any such problems. At the same time some of our customers enjoy doing the repair work themselves. We hereby offer some of the tips on how to replace a damaged screen yourself.
Given that there is no structural damage, and we are talking about sagging or tears, a replacement of the screen would include:
- the removal of the rubber spline (which holds the screening in place) from its seating
- the removal of the damaged screen
- the fixing of a new screen with a new spline
The necessary tool kit:
- The replacement screen (to measure)
- The spline (to measure)
- Spline roller
- Screwdriver (small)
- Utility knife
- Needle nose plier
- Stiff-bristle nylon brush
- Measuring tape
- The removal of the rubber spline and the damaged screen
- To remove the rubber spline either pull from the damaged area or lift and pull out the spline at the corner with the end of a flat-blade screwdriver.
- Help yourself with the needle nose plier to remove all the rubber spline that holds the damaged screen on the panel and throw it out.
- Take out all the leftover threads to clean the spline channel.
- Finish the cleaning with a stiff-bristle brush gently scrubbing out any leftover materials.
- The fixing of a new screen
- Prepare the right size of the screen for replacement (adding at least two extra inches both to the length and the width of the area that you are rescreening)
- Cut the new rubber spline by measuring it exactly from corner to corner along its seating channel (no excess material is required here)
- Place the new screen in position leaving at least one inch (two inches ??) of extra material by each of four sides.
- With someone else helping you here. The helper would need to add tension as you begin to fix the new screen with the rubber spline
- Starting with the top edge you need to insert the spline on its channel with the roller by applying pressure and moving towards the bottom side.
- Follow the same procedure for the other sides making sure that your helper is creating enough pressure to the screen to eliminate any sagging or wrinkles.
- Using the utility knife you can now cut off the excess material (along the outside edge of the spline channel) by all four sides of the panel. Be careful not to cut the spline.
If everything was done right, you have finished the task.
